PERIZYM: Non-GMO Enzymes for Textile and Garment Finishing

The application of enzymes helps saving energy, water, textile auxiliaries and process chemicals in textile finishing and garment industry. This way finishing procedures for textiles and ready-made garments can become more sustainable and more environmentally friendly. The non-GMO enzymes from our PERIZYM product range, which are all produced from non-genetically modified organisms, fulfil various ecological standards.

Dr. Petry provides different natural enzymes, such as amylases, catalases, and cellulases from non-genetically modified organisms (non-GMO).

Enzymes without Genetic Modification

Enzymes for technical and industrial purposes can be produced by different organisms. Usually they are generated from bacteria, fungi, animal or plant cells. Usually these “cell factories” are tuned by genetic modification to produce the desired proteins in larger quantities. But it is also possible to generate those biocatalysts by means of unadulterated bacteria or fungi which naturally produce these enzymes. In this case, no artificial intervention in the genome of the living biological cell is necessary. This means, the organisms are not genetically modified.

Ecological Standards Ban Genetic Engineering

Some ecological standards, such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) ban the use of genetically modified organisms, animals and plants. According to these standards no genetically modified cotton is allowed to be used as well as no enzymes which were derived from genetically modified organisms (GMO). The application of such GMO enzymes would breach the bio-organic principles of GOTS.

PERIZYM Enzymes Meet Environmental Standards

For textile and garment finishing we offer different PERIZYM enzymes which are produced by non-genetically modified organisms (non-GMO). This includes:

  • cellulase enzymes, which are able to split β-1,4-glycosidic bonds of cellulose molecules;
  • amylase enzymes, which can break down polysaccharides such as starch;
  • catalases, which can transform hydrogen peroxide into oxygen and water.

Non-GMO PERIZYM Product Recommendations:

Amylase for Enzymatic Desizing

PERIZYM N-HTV/L is a high temperature resistant non-GMO amylase for the desizing of starch-sized textiles. The enzyme was produced by non-genetically modified organisms (non-GMO). It shows the optimum desizing effect between 70 to 90 °C and at a pH value of 5,0 to 7,0. Under these conditions the amylase is quickly degrading the insoluble starch molecules into water-soluble substances. The desizing takes only 5 to 10 minutes. The amylase can also be deployed at lower temperatures, whereat the enzyme shows a lower activity. Garments and textiles can get desized with PERIZYM N-HTV/L already at temperatures of 40 to 50 °C, only the treatment duration need to be extended. However, the enzyme is not suitable for the CPB (Cold Pad Batch) process.

Catalase for Removing Residual Peroxide after Bleaching

PERIZYM N-CAT d.c. and PERIZYM N-CAT NEW are liquid catalase products. They are used for the inactivation of hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide should be removed after bleaching from the textile in order not to disturb the following dyeing and finishing processes. The peroxide could oxidize dyes which are sensitive to oxidation and thus have an impact on the dyeing result. Peroxide also has a negative influence on other enzymes such as cellulases, which could be inactivated by the residual peroxide during stone washing or biopolishing. The catalases split peroxide into environmentally friendly, inactive oxygen and water. No harmful substances, sulfates or nitrogenous salts are produced. The enzymes in PERIZYM N-CAT d.c. and PERIZYM N-CAT NEW are generated from non-genetically modified organisms (non-GMO).

Cellulases for Biopolishing and Garment Washing

PERIZYM BJ is a highly effective, very powerful cellulase combination for stone washing and biopolishing of garments which contain cellulosic fibers. The high performance cellulase is used for the stone washing of jeans and denim garments. This way the stone wash can be carried out without pumice stones. PERIZYM BJ is also used for removing fiber fluffs and pills from the textile surface. The enzymes in PERIZYM BJ were produced without the use of genetically modified organisms (non-GMO).

PERIZYM IND is an effective cellulase combination for the biopolishing of cellulose and its blends. The enzymatic treatment helps to remove pills, and hairy surfaces are smoothened. This results in a clear appearance and a smooth, precious handle of the processed textiles and garments. The enzymes in PERIZYM IND are also originated from not genetically modified organisms (non-GMO).
