PERISTAL COB: Corrosion Protection for Buttons, Rivets and Zippers

PERISTAL COB is an excellent anticorrosion agent, which helps to prevent the corrosion of metal applications and accessories on garments. Chemicals, like chlorine, hydrogen peroxide or potassium permanganate (KMnO4), which are used for bleaching, tend to corrode metals. They may also cause oxidative damage of cellulosic materials. Without an appropriate corrosion protection, buttons, rivets, hooks, eyelets or zippers can corrode during the wet finishing of garments on the drum washing machine.

PERISTAL COB serves as corrosion inhibitor for the protection of metal applications, like buttons, rivets and zippers, during the wet finishing of ready-made garments on drum washing machines.

Corrosion Inhibitor for the Protection of Metal Applications

Metal applications and accessories made of iron, nickel, copper or zinc alloys can corrode during wet finishing of garments on drum washing machines. Corroded and oxidized buttons, rivets, hooks, eyelets or zippers on trousers, shirts, jackets or jeans are the result. They are not only an optical blemish, but they also affect the functionality of press studs or zippers and they can cause unpleasant marks or stains on the garment’s surface. Depending on the composition of the alloys corrosion may arise during bleaching because of the strong oxidative effect of the bleaching agents used for garment bleaching (like potassium permanganate, peroxides or hypo chlorites). Furthermore, metallic pieces can chemically react and corrode also during dyeing or enzyme treatment processes.

Rust (Fe2O3) on ferrous accessories, white rust (various zinc compounds) on zinc-based applications or “verdigris” (a greenish patina consisting of Cu(OH)2 and CuCO3) on rivets or buttons made of copper alloys can result. Corroded metals, which were already attached to a ready-made textile, cannot be restored to their original state. The addition of an anticorrosion agent can effectively prevent the corrosion of metallic applications. Oxidized, corroded or rusty metal parts, which can arise during wet finishing without an additional corrosion inhibitor, can cause prints, stains and “rust patches” on textile fabrics. These stains need to be removed with considerable effort from the garments.

Irreversible Catalytic Damages on Textiles

After bleaching cotton garments holes can emerge on the fabrics. Those holes might be caused by catalytic damages of the cotton fibers. Catalyzed by metallic catalysts, like iron of rivets or buttons, cellulose can be degraded to oxycellulose or hydrocellulose during oxidative bleaching processes. Those water-soluble decomposition products get washed out of the cotton textiles and the holes appear.

Without corrosion protection further irreparable catalytic damages can occur on sulphur-black-dyed garments during peroxide bleaching processes on garment-washing machines. Especially along zippers or next to rivets the dyestuff can get destroyed completely, causing irreversible white spots on the clothing articles.

If no anticorrosive agent is used during garment dyeing of red shades, especially of scarlet red dyed with reactive or direct dyes, unwanted bright or dark spots can occur on the goods.

PERISTAL COB: Corrosion Protection for Buttons, Rivets and Accessories

PERISTAL COB, a special product for the garment finishing, is an excellent anticorrosive agent for metal applications on ready-made pieces. The corrosion inhibitor is protecting applications of various alloys containing different metals like iron, nickel, copper or zinc. The product covers metallic parts with a “protective film” and thus prevents their corrosion.

For optimum protection against stains and to secure a best possible effectiveness, we recommend to treat the garments with PERISTAL COB for a short time in the drum washing machine. After this pretreatment further chemicals and auxiliaries for bleaching, dyeing or enzymatic treatments can be added.
