PERICOAT Compounds: Blackout Coating for Light Protection

For absolute light protection and total darkening of rooms blackout fabrics are finished with a lightproof coating. Woven fabrics with blackout coatings are used as home textiles for private and commercial applications as curtains, pleated or roller blinds for light, sun, sight and heat protection. For the preparation of stable coating foams for blackout coatings we offer you new PERICOAT compounds with flame-retarding properties.

For blackout coatings Textilchemie Dr. Petry GmbH offers PERICOAT BO/NW and PERICOAT BO/NB, two products for good light shielding effects which are easy to handle.

PERICOAT Compounds for Blackout Effects

We offer two coating compounds, PERICOAT BO/NW and PERICOAT BO/NB for the production of blackout articles with stable coating foams. Our textile auxiliaries are easy to handle and provide excellent light shielding together with good flame retardancy.

Use of Blackout Fabrics

Blackout fabrics obtain their light impermeability by a special blackout coating. They are installed in rooms where complete light shielding is required, such as in public institutions, like hospitals, sanatoriums, retirement or nursing homes, in hotel and conference rooms, and for events, like lectures, theater performances or movie screenings. Blackout fabrics are also used in private domains, for example in bedrooms, living and children’s rooms for light, sun, sight and heat protection.

Blackout and Dimout Fabrics

The main difference between blackout and dimout fabrics is their manufacturing method. Blackout fabrics are produced with a special three-layer coating process and offer almost complete light shielding. Dimout fabrics have a special three-layer fabric construction, with a black layer in the middle. They usually have a lower darkening capacity than coated blackout fabrics.

Design and Technical Possibilities

For safety reasons blackout fabrics are mostly permanently flame-retardant. Furthermore, the fabrics can be finished with a water- or stain-repellent finishing. Blackout textiles do not necessarily have to be black or dark-colored in order to be light shielding. Only the middle layer of the three coatings should be black for obtaining the necessary light absorption. The first and the third layers are necessary to prevent the black coating layer from showing through. Thereby these two coatings do not need to be white, they can be colored in any other desired shade. Blackout textiles offer manifold color and design options. The textiles can be printed on both sides or embossed with different surface structures on the calender. With functional coating the fabrics can gain additional technical properties. Reflecting coatings can reflect sun and heat radiation and thus not only provide light but also heat protection.

Our PERICOAT Product Recommendations

Our coating compounds PERICOAT BO/NW and PERICOAT BO/NB give a very good blackout and light shielding effect. Articles coated with the two compounds have a very soft, smooth handle. The integrated non-halogen flame retardant ensures very good flame-retarding properties. PERICOAT BO/NW and PERICOAT BO/NB are easy to handle. The compounds contain – apart from a foam stabilizer – all necessary auxiliaries and additives for foam coating. By adding a stabilizer like PERICOAT STABILIZER STA you obtain highly stable coating foams, which keep their foam structure even after drying.

PERICOAT BO/NW

PERICOAT BO/NW is a white foam coating compound for the production of blackout articles. It is used for flame retardant stable foam coatings.

PERICOAT BO/NB

PERICOAT BO/NB is a black pigmented, self-crosslinking foam compound for the production of blackout articles. It is used for blackout coating of technical textiles.

PERICOAT STABILIZER STA

PERICOAT STABILIZER STA is used as a foam stabilizer for foamable coating pastes.

Our Process Recommendation for Blackout Coatings

For the production of a blackout coating with PERICOAT BO/NW and PERICOAT BO/NB we suggest the following process:

  • 1st layer: white foam coating with PERICOAT BO/NW
  • 2nd layer: black foam coating with PERICOAT BO/NB
  • 3rd layer: white foam coating with PERICOAT BO/NW

After each layer the coating should be dried at 100 °C, cured at 160 °C and then lastly pressed on the cold calender.
